Paphiopedilums or lady slipper orchids, have characteristic pitcher-like flowers. Although they appear carnivorous in shape and physiology, they do not eat insects. They have very similar care requirements to the more common Phalaenopsis (moth orchid) genus with a preference for slightly more water. This is a mini primary hybrid that has mottled leaves and produces white and pink dotted blooms that last up to 3 months. The leaves are almost as beautiful as the white speckled blooms, making this an attractive eye-catching plant year round.
Blooming size orchid. Unless stated, the orchid may not be in bloom.
PAPHIOPEDILUM CARE INFO (BRACHY):
Potting mix: Coarse/fine bark mix topped with crushed oyster shell. Repot in Spring every other year. Doesn't like frequent repotting.
Light: Medium light, can be lower than Maudie varieties. North or East facing is preferred. South or West will burn leaves, ensure proper shielding to protect from direct sun exposure. Place within 3 ft of a light source or window.
Water: Water frequently in hot months when media reaches dry. Do not allow to stay dry for long periods. Once or twice weekly is a good rule of thumb. Flush the pot monthly to prevent salt build up. Drier winter rest required.
Temp: Intermediate-warm (50F min night, 85F max day). Needs a temperature drop at night of 10-15 degrees. Cooler Winter rest with 70F max day.
Humidity: 40-70%, tolerant of moderate-low humidity.
Fertilizing: 1/4 strength urea-free fertilizer, weekly as new roots and leaves emerge. Stop during Winter rest. Sensitive to salt accumulation.
