Paphiopedilums or lady slipper orchids, have characteristic pitcher-like flowers. Although they appear carnivorous in shape and physiology, they do not eat insects. Paph. moquettianum is a small species from Indonesia and Southwest Java. It produces single pink and yellow blooms that emerge one after the other in a sequential manner. Will bloom repeatedly on the same spike, so do not cut spike. In our care, in indoor Seattle climate, it has been a very easy and forgiving orchid.

Plant may vary from pictured. Unless stated, will not be in bloom.

CARE INFO:

Potting mix: Coarse/fine bark and lava rock mix or orchid bark. Repot in Spring once per year or every other year before the bark breaks down. Note that bark acidifies over time and the lower pH can harm these plants. Crushed limestone can be applied to the top of the media to help raise the pH. A good pH range is 6.9-7.5. Leaf yellowing can be caused by the pH moving out of this range.

Light: Bright-indirect to medium light. North or East facing is acceptable. South or West tolerated, ensure proper shielding to protect leaves from direct sun exposure.

Water: Water frequently in hot months when media is nearly dry. Do not allow to reach and stay dry.

Temp: Intermediate-warm (50F min night, 85F max day).

Humidity: 30-60%, tolerant of low humidity.

Fertilizing: 1/4 strength urea-free fertilizer, every 3 weeks to once a month as new roots and leaves emerge. Flush the pot with water once monthly to remove mineral build up. Decrease to 1/4 or 1/8 strength once monthly in Winter.
