Dendrobium chrysopterum (syn obtusisepalum) 4in
This is a semi-deciduous species that may lose leaves during the winter. After a busy growing season, the leaves can begin to yellow and drop in the fall triggering a period of dormancy. Blooming happens in the spring from the leafless canes and is followed by another vigorous growth period. This is a New Guinea species which grows very thin and tall and produces bright orange bell-shaped blooms. Can be staked vertically or grown upside down.
Blooming size. Plant may vary from the one pictured.
CARE INFO:
Potting mix: Coarse orchid bark or well-draining bark mix. Repot in Spring once root bound. Do not allow bark to become waterlogged.
Light: Bright indirect - partial direct light. Shaded South or West facing preferred. Bright North is also acceptable.
Water: Water frequently in hot months when media reaches dry. Decrease dramatically in winter, allowing full drying between waterings. These enjoy rapid wet/dry cycles.
Temp: Intermediate-warm (55F min night, 90F max day).
Humidity: 60-80%, tolerant of lower humidity with adequate watering.
Fertilizing: 1/4 strength urea-free fertilizer, every other watering as new roots and leaves emerge. Decrease or stop fertilizing in winter. General rule: begin in Spring, stop in Winter.
